With all that has been going on in the United States in recent months, it may not be surprising to see such a variety of thought-provoking images. Some of these artists worked within a more Romantic tradition; others within a more Realistic tradition. Some focused their attentions on the emotions of soldiers who travel off to fight in wars to protect their country; others focused on the lives of veterans after returning from war. Some of these artists looked to the past, choosing the create imagined scenes from a past war or even a pre-Revolutionary "America." Still others looked at the present, depicting more contemporary views of what the United States is or what the United States could be. As you study these pieces, think about the idea of Patriotism and about what you would depict in your work.
